Since I can blog about anything for today’s blog, I decided to do another commonplace article. I have found many articles very interesting and relate to my life well. The article I read today is called Going Green: Just Another Act? by Kimberly Schmahl. It sounds like something about protecting our environment, and it is. However, it is under the celebrities category and it has something to do with celebrities. The EMA, Environmental Media Association, uses a lot of celebrities to promote eco-friendly lifestyles through television, film, and music. EMA thinks that many people, especially teenagers and young adults, idolize celebrities and will follow those celebrities’ footsteps and change to eco-friendly lifestyles. However, as the article pointed out, a lot of celebrities only do it in front of the camera, but not in their everyday life. The examples the article gave are Leonardo diCaprio and Bono, the lead singer of U2. Both of them promote environmental protection while Leonardo diCaprio travels around in his private jet and Bono spent $1700 to fly his hat in first class cabinet.
After reading this article, I was reminded of something we had discussed about in our last English class, the celebrity image. Some of the celebrities act so differently in front of and behind cameras as if everything positive they do on TV is some kind of acting class. If they promote something that is going to help us or is good for the society, then they should do it in their life. Then we can follow their paths and make the same contribution. If they just do it for fame, then it won’t reach the real intention.
I read that article too. Who spends that much money to fly just a hat? And why first class? The hat doesn't know the difference. Crazy!
