No.46: About Anything

Today I want to recommend a course to all of you, Women’s Studies 110. I am taking it right now and I absolutely love it! My course instructor is Kate Livingston, and she is such a passionate person. She does a lot of fun activities in class, for example, when we first started this class and were talking about feminism, she asked us to draw a picture of how we think a feminist person would look like. We did this in groups of fours. After every group was finished, she posted every drawing on the wall and had we all look at them together. It was a lot of fun seeing how each group had different ideas about feminism.

So far, we have covered feminism, privileges and oppression, social construction of gender, body and sexuality, and reproductive rights. We also watched some videos on these topics. The one I remember the most is called Dreamworld 3. It says that nowadays, women’s bodies are used as advertisement to attract viewers to purchase or to use the products. In a lot of the music videos, a single man is surrounded by a great number of women and women normally are pictured as wanting nothing but sex. This really makes me mad.  The videos also use objectification to show women as separate body parts, but not a whole person. There was one example Dreamworld 3 gave, that the music video was shot between a woman’s two legs. After watching this video, every time I go to lunch in Fresh Express, I get mad by looking at the music videos they play down there.

If you are interested in women’s and minority’s rights or things like that, you should take Women’s Studies. It is a very good course and it is definitely worth the time you spend on it.
